American Powertrain introduces their new Pro-Fit 5-speed system for classic Corvettes featuring the all new TREMEC TKX 5-Speed. The new TKX Pro-Fit kit fits vintage Corvettes like an original GM manual transmission with the correct shift position and tunnel fit. The new TKX features a streamlined case for improved fitment with zero tunnel modifications. American Powertrain modifies the TKX shifter location that mimics the stock 4-speed fitment and shifter location. Replica shifter handles and shift pattern plates finish out the look for factory original.
The new Pro-Fit 5-speed system features the new TREMEC TKX transmission with 600 lb-ft of torque capacity with shifts up to 7500 RPM. The system comes with American Powertrain’s patented driveshaft yoke, brand new DOM driveshaft and all installation parts for easy installation without having to remove the engine. The Pro-Fit kits are covered by American Powertrain’s two year warranty and comprehensive tech support.
American Powertrain, a TREMEC Elite Distributor located in Cookeville, TN, manufactures and sells Pro-Fit modern overdrive transmission systems, Hydramax hydraulic clutch systems, X-Factor Cross Members and thousands of powertrain accessories for muscle, sports, street rod and race cars. What’s the price of the TKX 5 speed for a C3 corvette?
Starting price is around $3800. Give us a call at 931-646-4836 for quick quote over the phone.
Do you have to use a hydraulic clutch on the TKX 5 speed, or can you use the stock clutch on C3 corvette?
You can run either one. We have a complete hydraulic kit or you can run the stock linkage. The TKX bolts up like a Muncie.
Looking to install a TKX in a 67 C2 Coupe currently outfitted with original 4 speed Muncie and 4:11 posi rear. Have a few questions:
1. Is the TKX truly a “no cut to tunnel or frame” installation, including factory transmission cross mount frame component?
2 Want to have an idea of differences between gear ratios of “factory trans” 1 thru 4 as compared with “TKX” 1 thru 4 & 5 and resulting RPM reduction, all relative to my 4:11 differential. Not sure if I worded it correctly, but hope you get the point.
3. What is the benefit of upgrading to a hydraulic clutch setup, other than the “less leg power” factor?
4. My car only has about 6500 miles on it since it was restored to near original condition about 8 years ago and I don’t know if it has the standard or heavy-duty clutch / pressure plate / throw out bearing assembly. Would it make sense to put in these “new” components while this deep into surgery?
5. I wish to maintain the stock shifter “look”, with reverse lockout, but want to know if there is a short throw option since shifting with the stock setup seems like a long journey from 1 to 4.
6. Any other key points I need to be thinking about “globally” while going down this path?
6. Last question…is Tremec contemplating coming out with a 6-speed version including all of the TKX’s retro-fit features?
We have been doing Corvette kits for 15 years with TKO before the TKX even came out. We machined the case to fit the tunnel with no mods even with a TKO. TKX fits even better. In fact the owner of the company has all years of Vettes. That’s what led to this. Suffice to say there is no cutting. We have perfected the install. We use a patented driveshaft flange that makes the install a little easier as well. The benefit of hydraulic is no moving parts to wear out or come loose. More room for long tube headers if that is in the future. The mechanical works just fine we sell tons of these with mechanical. If you are going to a twin disk or have more power then you might consider the upgrade. If your car is stock, i would stay mechanical. We have a replica t-handle shifter that comes out in the stock location. We even have a shift pattern plate with the 5-speed pattern that looks factory. You will have to change the disc to a 26-spline but you can reuse the new pressure plate, throw out bearing etc and the factory 4-speed bell housing. Tremec is not contemplating a smaller 6-speed. We have asked about it. 4.11 gears with the 2.87 1st and .68 OD will work perfectly. Its our number one selling ratio set. That set up is good for 3.73-4.11 gears no problem.
