Stuck in Gear? Let’s fix it

Get a new TKX and it seems like it is stuck in gear? It’s an easy fix!

What is happening and why is it stuck? Tremec ships these transmissions in neutral. What can happen is that these transmissions can get bounced around in the delivery truck. If they get bounced around too hard, the shift rails can get knocked out of alignment. Not to worry its easy to fix (if it’s out of the car). We recommend to all our customers to make sure the transmission shifts before you install it in your car. This is a lot easier to fix now than after it’s installed. Lets get started.

First thing is look for the center cover on the top of the transmission. There are 4 screws that hold the cover on. They are Torx T27. Be careful as they do have some thread sealer on them. Also there is a paper gasket under this cover. It is reusable, but take care not to rip it.

Next you will see if the shift rail lugs are out of alignment. In neutral these should be lined up straight across.

If they are not lined up that is your problem. Now take a large screwdriver or pry bar (not too big!) It does not take much effort at all. Pry the shift lug towards the back of the transmission. It should just pop back into place.

Now they should be lined up perfectly! You can test it out and see if it shifts.

Ok but what if the other side is out of alignment? Just do the opposite. If the right side is down we are just going to pry it forward on the transmission.

If you did all this and it is still stuck in gear. Call our tech line at 931-646-4836 and we can help you with the process or dig deeper into another issue that might be causing it.
